Larry E DeYott
September 11, 1964 –
February 6, 2022

On Sunday, February 6, 2022, Lawrence Eugene DeYott, who had stood in the gap to battle so many times for us, lost his 7-week battle with Covid and passed away at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, Virginia with his wife and children by his side.
He is survived by his wife of almost 39 years, Deanna Rennie DeYott, daughter Katherine Louise DeYott and son Joseph Edward DeYott; his mother Connie McCarthy DeYott; seven siblings Joy & (Jim) Grady, Denise DeYott, Donata DeYott, Lorrie DeYott, Dan Joe DeYott, Rae Ann Forseth, Bill & (Sandy) DeYott; sister-in-law Dianna Rennie, brother & sister-in-law Michael and Laurie Rennie, brother-in-law Chad Rennie; fifteen nieces and nephews,  seven great nieces and nephews, a multitude of cousins, and a Corps of brothers from around the world.
He was preceded in death by his father Donald Edward DeYott, his mother-in-law Roberta Haptonstall Rennie, father-in-law Joseph Rennie Jr., three siblings, Stephen Edward, Debra Ann and Patricia Ann, and two nephews.
Larry was born in Butte on September 11, 1964, on a Friday night, interrupting his father’s watching of the Butte Central football game.  He was raised in Deer Lodge where he graduated from Powell County High School in 1982 (thanks to Deanna’s ability to complete his English courses). The year before he graduated from high school, Larry enlisted in the Marine Corps in the delayed entry program and proudly served for 33 and ½ years before retiring as a Master Gunnery Sergeant.
He married Deanna Rennie on April 16, 1983, in Drummond, Montana and promptly deployed to Okinawa on his first of many deployments of his Marine Corps career around the world.  Katie and Joey were both born in sunny, southern California and enjoyed different cultures and experiences in their father’s career.  Larry was always very proud of his children, their accomplishments and their adaptability. He was able to bring his family to Abu Dhabi, UAE and Gaborone, Botswana, Africa while he served as Detachment Commander for the Marine Security Guard Detachment in those locations.
While in Africa he was able to fulfill every little boy’s dream of an African big game hunt during which Larry bagged a kudu, which was barbecued and shared with his Marines and friends. The Kudu shoulder mount is displayed at his parent’s home.  He also snagged a tiger fish on the Zambezi River that his father proudly displayed for years.
Larry’s first assignment after graduating from Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego and Infantry Training School Camp Pendleton was “Charley” Company 1st Battalion 7th Marines. He served in “Echo” Company 2nd Battalion 9th Marines; Marine Combat Training at SOI Camp Pendleton; and 2nd Battalion 1st Marines.  Larry served as an instructor at Headquarters and Instructor Company, Infantry Training Battalion, School of Infantry (West). Larry was Operations Chief at Headquarters Battalion, 1st Marine Division, G-3. He graced the halls of Headquarters Marine Corp, Marine Manpower Enlisted Assignments, where he served as the 0369 monitor. Larry was then assigned to I Marine Expeditionary Force, G-3 section as the Operation Chief for I-MEF (fwd) in Iraq. Larry then served as Operations Chief/Senior Enlisted Advisor to the J-3, of the International Joint Command, International Security Assistance Force, Kabul Afghanistan, where he worked with peers from other countries. Master Gunnery Sergeant DeYott was then assigned to Marine Corps Embassy Security Group as the Operations and Training Chief.  A year later he transferred to the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory and assumed the billet of Senior Enlisted Advisor until his retirement in 2014.
His personal awards include: Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (fourth award), and Combat Action Ribbon (Iraq), Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Navy Unit Commendation (second award), Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation (fourth award), Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal (tenth award), National Defense Service Medal (second award), Armed Forces Expeditionary medal (Jordan), Afghanistan Campaign Medal (W/1 Star) Iraq Campaign Medal (W/1 Star) Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal (Iraq), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (11), Navy and Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon (3), Marine Security Guard Ribbon, NATO Medal - ISAF Afghanistan, Sharpshooter Rifle Badge, Expert Pistol Badge (5), Letter of Appreciation (3), Certificate of Appreciation (2), Meritorious Mast (3).
Larry participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom from 8/8/04-3/24/05; Operation Iraqi Freedom from 1/26/06-2/14/07; Operation Enduring Freedom Afghanistan from 12/08/09 -12/23/10.
Respected, loved, admired, and often emulated by subordinates, peers, and seniors alike.  He dedicated his entire career to the ‘service’ of his Marines and their accomplishments are a testament to his dedication and love. Larry was a pillar within the Master Gunnery Sergeant community and, even in retirement, Larry was a mentor and instructor to Marines in his work as an independent contractor.   He enjoyed working with his friends, whose knowledge and skills and camaraderie were one of the best parts of retirement.
Larry was finally able to take a hunting trip this past fall with his Marine Corps brothers John (Hank) Polyzos, Michael Horne and longtime friend Art Collins.  They had a great time, even though no animals were harmed by them in the great Montana outdoors.
You may share your condolences at the Covenant Funeral Home website (https://www.covenantfuneralservice.com/tributes/Larry-DeYott) for family and friends to enjoy.
If you wish to send flowers, we ask for no lilies please due to medical concerns.  Flowers may be sent to the DeYott Family at 1012 Kentucky Ave Deer Lodge, MT 59722.
Larry will be interred near his father, at Hillcrest Cemetery in Deer Lodge, MT at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 6, 2022.  Following the graveside service, a celebration of life and luncheon will be held at the Deer Lodge Elks Lodge. Please bring your stories and memories to share.
