Thomas “Tom” Tuthill Luce April 20, 1935 - February 13, 2022 Thomas “Tom” Tuthill Luce, 86, peacefully passed away on Sunday, February 13, 2022 surrounded by loving family. Tom was born in Deer Lodge, Montana on April 20, 1935 to Ira T. and Mary C. Luce. He graduated from Powell County High School in 1953, proudly representing them in basketball on the runner-up team for the State Championship. Tom went on to attend the University of Montana in Missoula getting his Bachelor of Science in 1958 while also working as a Brakeman for the Milwaukee Railroad. In 1959, he ventured north to Alaska to pursue a career in Education and Administration, working as a teacher and administrator with the On-Base-School system and the Anchorage School District for 28 years. Tom coached and refereed basketball, served in the Air National Guard and obtained his Masters in Education from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. He ultimately retired from education in 1987. Tom spent the next twenty years in management with Holland America/Gray Line in Alaska, which led to more time on the railroad in Denali Park and Portage Glacier as well as world-wide travels. He retired from tourism as the Shore Operations Manager in San Diego, CA in 2008. His love of travel, hunting and golf was eclipsed when he started his ultimate career as Grandpa to Hunter (2000), Mike (2006) and Sam (2008). He settled in the San Francisco Bay Area to be near “his boys’’ and live his best retirement. Tom is survived by his brother Bert Luce (Carol) of Evanston, IL, his ex-wife Peggy Luce of Warrenton, NC, daughter Mary Peeff (Dan) and grandsons Hunter, Michael and Sam Peeff of Pleasant Hill, CA, son Tom Luce (Laura) of Warrenton, NC, and cousin Margy Pat Lawrence of Spokane, WA. Tom requested no funeral services; rather, in Tom’s memory, memorials can be made to two charities near and dear to his heart - the Make A Wish Foundation or to the Desmoid Tumor Research Foundation.
