Carl (Bud) Stav Jr., 94, died peacefully on May 19, 2022. Carl was born July 31, 1927, to Carl Stav Sr. and Kate (Jursnick) Stav in Deer Lodge, Mont.
He grew up hunting and fishing in the Deer Lodge area during the depression. Hunting and fishing turned into a lifelong passion. In 1945 he graduated from Powell County High School and enlisted in the Navy for the duration. He was discharged in August of 1946.
After returning home, he worked for Safeway grocery stores in Deer Lodge and Helena. While working in Helena, he met Betty Lou Moore. They were married June 14,1949, at the Cathedral of St. Helena.
His career with Safeway took them to Dillon; Deer Lodge, where daughter Cathy was born; Chouteau; Butte, where daughter Patty was born; and finally, Glendive, as manager of the new store there. After leaving Safeway, he worked for Chrisafulli Pump Co. of Glendive. During his time with Chrisafulli, he and Betty traveled throughout the U. S. Two of their favorite places were New Orleans and Stuttgart, Ark.
In 1977 Bud and Betty moved back to Deer Lodge where he worked for 10 years as a Corrections Officer at Montana State Prison. During these years they spent time camping at Georgetown Lake with family. They also made many good friends at Georgetown and looked forward to getting together with them year after year.
He was also very involved with Ducks Unlimited, receiving several awards for his many hours of work devoted to “the ducks.”
Bud was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 64 years, Betty; his daughter, Patty Mehr; his sister and brother-in-law, Alice and Doug Lodge; Betty’s brother and his wife, Jack and Penny Moore; niece, Carolyn Lang; and nephew, Joe Moore.
He is survived by his daughter, Cathy (Gary) Meidinger; and son-in-law, Fritz Mehr. Grandchildren: Jamie (Sky) Stanton, Laura (Brad) Reardon, Chad (Adrienne) Meidinger, Brad (Chandi) Mehr, Chris (Cassie) Mehr. Great Grandchildren: Tyler and Kaitlyn Stanton, Kara Reardon, Gavin Meidinger, Cooper Mehr, Caleb and Callie Mehr; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial and reception will be held at Anderson Stevenson Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 26. Burial will follow the reception at Hillcrest Cemetery in Deer Lodge.
The family would like to thank the medical staff of St. Peter’s Hospital third floor medical unit for the excellent and compassionate care he received the last week of his life.
Memorials may be to Ducks Unlimited or a charity of your choice. Please visit www.aswfuneralhome.com to offer a condolence to the family or to share a memory of Carl.
