Dave Roger Newman Dave Roger Newman, 80, of Elliston passed away in the early morning of August 27, 2014 at the family home. He was born December 10, 1933 in Butte to his parents, Leo and Kay Newman, who lived and worked at the Gold Coin mining operation west of Anaconda. In 1934 the family moved to what is now known as “Newman’s Camp” up Telegraph Creek south of Elliston where he grew to roam and love the surrounding hills. He attended school in Butte and Elliston before graduating from Powell County High School in Deer Lodge in 1952. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1955 and was stationed at Ellsworth AFB in Rapid City, S.D. He married Doris Crowser in 1956 and had one son, but later divorced. In 1959, he married Norma Berg of Spearfish, S.D. and had five children. He was honorably discharged from military service in 1964 after tours in South Dakota, Alaska, Guam and Morocco. Throughout his life, Dave held various jobs that included being the first newspaper delivery boy in Elliston, working on the railroad, gas station attendant, underground phosphate miner, airplane and missile refueling and a finish carpenter, but his true passion was gold mining. He was active in the Elliston 27 Club, the Elliston Cemetery Committee and the Elliston Volunteer Fire Department. He is survived by his wife, Norma; children, Walt (ex-wife Shawna) Newman of Bremerton, Wash., Deb (Rich) Hendrix of Helena, Becky (Dave) Sitch of Helena, Greg (Terri) Newman of Spring Creek, Nev., John Newman of Layton, Utah, Steve (Betta) Newman of Layton, Utah; grandchildren, Jessie (Kayron), Nikki, Brianna (Tymon), Matthew, Amy, Jacob, Clay, Blake and great-granddaughter Marley. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, John Jay Newman. As per Dave’s wishes, no graveside or memorial services will be held. His ashes will be scattered at his favorite place‚ his mining claims‚ during a future family gathering. Any donations in his name may be given to Hospice of St Peter’s or the Elliston Cemetery Fund. Ada Ruby Reed Holt passed away on August 31 at the Deer Lodge Care and Rehabilitation Center. Visitation will be at Jewell Funeral Home on Thursday, September 4, from 4-8 p.m. Internment and Eastern Star graveside services will be held Friday, September 5, at 1 p.m. at Hillcrest Cemetery.
